    Standard Operating Procedures for Fire Officer I

    • There are three options for obtaining Fire Officer I certification:

    • Members with an associate's or bachelor's degree in Fire Science or EMS Management from an accredited institution are in compliance with the Fire Officer I requirement.

    • Rescue company officers must have detailed knowledge of emergency medical care and control of other emergency situations; they must know the location of streets and buildings in their response territory
    • Suppression division company officers must have detailed knowledge in the prevention and extinguishment of fire, and control of other emergency situations
    • Company officers must provide supervision, guidance, encouragement, and training to ensure that personnel under their command meet the standards of the JFRD

    Standard Operating Procedures for Engineers

    • Engineers are the primary operators of JFRD apparatus
    • They are in charge of the company in the absence of the company officer, unless another is designated by the District/Battalion Chief
    • Must have thorough knowledge of apparatus operation, carried equipment and operation of other related apparatus
    • Must have a general knowledge of major streets and buildings
    • Must know locations (first and second alarm territories) of streets, water supply sources, schools, commercial buildings and other high-risk structures relevant to their assigned stations
    • Must know emergency routes, including hospital emergency rooms used by the JFRD
    • Responsible for safe operation of apparatus during both normal and emergency conditions

    Standard Operating Procedures for Firefighters

    • Firefighters are the basic operational personnel of JFRD, responsible for performing all duties required by superiors
    • Must know major city streets, buildings, and locations of water supplies and hazard structures (first and second alarm territories) within their assigned district
    • Must know how to operate all equipment carried on their apparatus (and those on related ones)
    • Must have basic operational skills relevant to the fire service
    • Must complete company drills and training encompassing physical and mental health in a manner that prepares them to perform any assigned duty. Training encompasses all facets of JFRD operations (company officer, District/Battalion Chief, Training divisions)

    Standard Operating Procedures for Probationary Firefighters

    • Probationary Firefighters must complete certain requirements within 12 months of hire to become full-time JFRD employees; these include:
      • Successful completion of driver and apparatus training
      • Mastering basic fireground skills
      • Passing two written, oral, and practical examinations within the 7-month and/or 11-month periods. This includes passing the probationary checklist.
    • Unless extenuating circumstances exist, firefighters cannot change stations during probationary period

    Standard Operating Procedures for Attendance Policy

    • JFRD personnel on 24-hour shifts must report to work by 0800 hours; other shifts must report by their designated start time. They remain on duty until officially relieved.
    • Before being relieved, personnel must complete certain tasks and log-in processes; failure to complete these duties may impede the relief process.

    • Stations must be kept clean, orderly, and organized by designated personnel; this includes maintaining an appropriate environment to support crew safety, health, and morale.
