Chapter 5: Nafs and Qalb from Islamic Perspective
- This chapter explores the concept of Nafs (self) and Qalb (heart) from an Islamic perspective.
Al-Nafs
- Meaning: Refers to the self, its characteristics, and ways to control it. The degree of the Nafs is also discussed.
- Characteristics: Inclined to ownership/power, hasty, contentious, inclined to enmity, social creature, inclined to religion and worship.
-
Quranic References: Detailed meanings of Al-Nafs are outlined according to the Quran(Al-Nisa', 4:1; Al-Zumar, 39:42; An-Najm, 53:23; Yusuf, 12:26; Al-Maidah, 5:45).
- The Quran encourages study of Al-Nafs (Al-Rum, 30:8; Al-Dhariyat, 51:20-21; Fussilat, 41:53; Al-Kahfi, 18:51).
-
Degrees of Al-Nafs: Different degrees of the self's development (Al-Malhamah, Al-Ammarah, Al-Lawwamah, Al-Zakiyyah, Al-Mutmainnah).
-
Al-Malhamah: The soul is capable of hearing, seeing, imagining, thinking, and remembering (Al-Shams, 7-8).
-
Al-Ammarah: The self inclines to evil (Yusuf 12:53), as injustice fuels it (Ibn Qayyim).
-
Al-Lawwamah: Self-reproaching; the soul regrets its sins and seeks to do good (Al-Qiyamah, 201). Al-Shawkani connects this to the soul's awareness of its own shortcomings.
-
Al-Zakiyyah: A purified state of self (Al-Shams, 9). The soul is detached from negative beliefs, actions, and words.
-
Al-Mutmainnah: Free from impurities and confident, calm, and content with Allah. This is due to strong belief, rewards, and pleasure felt by Allah (Al-Fajr, 27-30). Qurtubi refers to this degree as a state of esteem and calmness, while Mujahide adds contentment with the will of Allah.
-
Ways to Control/Guide Al-Nafs
- Purification and Education: Nafs should be educated and strengthened to handle tribulations(Ali 'Imran, 3: 186).
- Positioned Correctly: Should not be praised excessively or looked down upon too much (Al-Najm, 32; Ali Imran, 188).
- Training: Should be trained to achieve good character traits (akhlaq) (Ali Imran, 3: 159).
- Obedience: Follow and obey Allah by encouragement and warnings (targhib and tarhib) (Al-A'raf, 7: 205).
- Relating to the Creator: Continuous remembrance of Allah (zikrullah), such as tasbih, tahmid, and takbir are highlighted (Al-A'raf, 7: 205).
