Ipratropium Bromide Overview
- Brand name: Atrovent
- Drug class: Anticholinergic, bronchodilator
Dosing Information
- Adult dosage: 250-500 μg via inhalation with a hand-held nebulizer every 20 minutes, for up to 3 times. NYS Protocols recommend 2.5 mg/3 mL NS via nebulizer.
- Pediatric dosage: Same as adult dosage.
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits acetylcholine at bronchial smooth muscle receptor sites.
- Results in bronchodilation and reduced respiratory secretions.
- Minimal systemic anticholinergic effects.
Indications for Use
- Effective for treating asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and bronchospasm.
Contraindications
- Not to be administered in cases of hypersensitivity to ipratropium, atropine, belladonna alkaloids, bromide, or fluorocarbons.
Side Effects and Adverse Reactions
- CNS: Nervousness, insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, headache.
- EENT: Blurred vision, dry mouth, hoarseness, sore throat.
- Respiratory: Cough, bronchospasm.

- Gastrointestinal: Nausea and vomiting.
