Study Notes
Introduction to Personality Theory
- Personality is a pattern of relatively permanent traits and unique characteristics that give both consistency and individuality to a person’s behavior.
- Sigmund Freud was the first to develop a modern theory of personality, based mostly on clinical observations.
- Modern theories of personality are based on both clinical observations and empirical research.
- A variety of perspectives have developed on how to best explain human personality.
What is a Theory?
- A scientific theory is a set of related assumptions that allows scientists to use logical deductive reasoning to formulate testable hypotheses.
- Theories are sets of related assumptions that are accepted as if they were true.
- Theories are not proven facts but are used to formulate hypotheses that can be tested using the scientific method.
Theory and Its Relatives
- Theory is a broader concept than hypothesis but is narrower than philosophy.
- Philosophy deals with what ought to be or should be; theory does not.
- Theories rely on speculation and are closely tied to empirically gathered data and science.
- Taxonomies can evolve into theories when they begin to generate testable hypotheses and to explain research findings.
Why Different Theories?
- Alternate theories exist because the nature of a theory allows the theorist to make speculations from a particular point of view.
- All theories are a reflection of their authors' personal backgrounds.
Perspectives in Theories of Personality
- Psychodynamic Theories focus on the importance of early childhood experience and relationships with parents as guiding forces for personality development. They also emphasize the unconscious mind and motives.
Psychodynamic Theories (Cont…)
- Psychoanalysis traditionally used dream interpretation to uncover the unconscious thoughts, feelings, and impulses.
Humanistic-Existential Theories
- These theories assume that people strive toward meaning, growth, well-being, happiness, and psychological health.
- Positive emotions and happiness foster psychological health and pro-social behavior.
- Existential theories emphasize the importance of negative experiences, such as failure, awareness of death, and anxiety, as part of the human condition that can foster psychological growth.
Dispositional Theories
- These theories argue that unique and long-term tendencies to behave in particular ways are the essence of our personality.
- These unique dispositions are called traits.
- There are five main trait dimensions in human personality.
Biological-Evolutionary Theories
- These theories posit that behavior, thought, feelings, and personality are influenced by differences in basic genetic, epigenetic, and neurological systems between individuals.
- Human thought, behavior, and personality have been shaped by forces of evolution (natural and sexual selection).
Learning-(Social) Cognitive Theories
- This perspective argues that how we think about ourselves and other people, as well as the assumptions we make and the strategies we use for solving problems, are key to understanding differences between people.
- Our beliefs about our capabilities influence our behavior and personality.
