- Roman Empire: First established Hospitals in the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) with caregivers having no formal training
- Middle Ages: Hospitals in large Byzantine cities primarily staffed with male assistants and male nurses
- Renaissance: Interest in the arts and sciences emerged. The traditional role of nurturer/caregiver in the home for women continued
- Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution: Medical schools established, nursing was considered unseemly for women although some hospitals relied on women for tasks such as basic care, making beds, and scrubbing floors.
