Introduction to Environment and Ecosystems

Environment can be defined as One's surroundings which include everything around the organism, i.e. Abiotic (Non-living) and Biotic (Living) environment.

Environment can be classified into two components: Abiotic or Non-living Component (includes Soil, Water, Air, Temperature, Light, Wind, Rainfall, Humidity, etc.) and Biotic or Living Component (includes Flora (Plants) and Fauna (animals) including Man).

Abiotic components in the environment of a carp fish in a pond include Light, Temperature, Water in which nutrients, Oxygen, other gases, and organic matter are dissolved.

Biotic components in the environment of a carp fish in a pond include Microscopic plankton as well as higher organisms like other fish and plants.

The term 'environment' encompasses the sum of all conditions and influences that affect the development and life of living organisms.

Any material that can be transformed in a way that it becomes more valuable and useful can be termed a Resource.

Energy, Mineral, Land, Food, Forest, Water, Atmosphere (Air), Plants and animals.

Renewable resources have the inherent ability to reappear or replenish themselves by recycling, reproduction or replacement within a given span of time.

Forests

Non-renewable resources are resources that cannot be replenished or renewed within a short period of time.
