Introduction to Clinical Psychology
- Clinical psychology integrates science, theory, and practice to understand, predict, and alleviate maladjustment, disability, and discomfort. It aims to promote human adaptation, adjustment, and personal development.
- Clinical psychology focuses on intellectual, emotional, biological, social, and behavioral aspects of human functioning across the lifespan, in diverse cultures, and at all socioeconomic levels.
Related Mental Health Professions
- Counselling Psychology: Similar to clinical psychology in training and services offered. Practitioners are trained in psychopathology, interviewing, assessment, counseling, psychotherapy, and research. They often address normal transitions and adjustments, such as career counseling related to life changes or developmental problems.
- School Psychology: Focuses on children, adolescents, adults, and their families in school and other educational settings. They receive more training in education and child development, focusing their interventions within these areas.
- Social Work: Trained in various psychotherapy techniques but generally focus more on social/situational variables affecting functioning rather than purely intrapersonal factors. They spend a significant amount of time in direct client contact, helping clients cope with complex problems in the world around them.
- Psychiatry: A medical specialty. Psychiatrists perform therapy, prescribe medication, conduct medical tests, teach, research, and engage in administration. While psychiatrists may have more medical training, clinical psychologists usually have greater training in psychological assessment and exposure to diverse psychological approaches.
Personal Requirements for Clinical Psychologists
- Clinical attitude/approach combines research on human behavior and mental processes with individual assessment to understand and help individuals.
- Both rigorous scientific principles and a profound interest in human beings are crucial. A strong, compassionate interest in people is essential.
- Important personality variables include: interest in people, integrity, emotional stability, and intellectual curiosity.
