Study Notes
Introduction to Biotechnology
- Biotechnology is a broad field.
- It encompasses many sub-fields.
Fields in Biotechnology
- Cytogenetics: Analysis of the number and structure of human and animal chromosomes. This field is dynamic and exciting.
- Molecular Genetics: The study of nucleic acid molecules at a molecular level. This allows for applications in biotechnology like PCR, phylogenetics, GMOs, and genetic engineering.
- Microbial Genetics: The processes of heritable information in microbes like bacteria, archaea, viruses, and some protozoa and fungi.
- Bioinformatics: Application of computer technology to manage biological information. Computers are used to collect, analyze and integrate biological/genetic information to apply to areas like drug discovery.
- Biochemical Genetics: Studies fundamental relationships between genes, protein, and metabolism. It's related to understanding the causes of many specific heritable diseases.
