Definition of Anatomy
- Anatomy is the science of body structure, arrangement and location.
- It is divided into systematic (descriptive anatomy) and microscopic anatomy.
- It is the basis for all medical science.
Organization of the Human Body
- The human body is organized from smallest to largest.
- From cell to tissue, organ, system and finally the body.
Anatomical Position
- The anatomical position is standardized for describing the body.
- It describes the body standing erect, feet together, upper limbs at the sides, palms facing forward, and face looking forward.
Anatomical Planes
- Planes are imaginary flat surfaces that divide the body.
Anatomical Terms Related to Position
- Anterior/Posterior:
- Anterior (ventral) is the front of the body.
- Posterior (dorsal) is the back of the body.
- Palmar refers to the ventral surface of the hand.
- Plantar refers to the sole of the foot.
- Proximal/Distal:
- Proximal refers to a point closer to the origin of a structure, like the shoulder joint.
- Distal refers to a point away from the origin of a structure, like the fingers.
