Study Notes

Stage Two: Organization

  • Organizing our world by creating categories and linking them together
  • Filling in gaps in perception to seek closure
  • Rules for organization:
    • Proximity: physically close things are perceived as a unit
    • Similarity: physically similar things are perceived as belonging together
    • Contrast: opposite of similarity, different things are perceived as part of the same unit
  • Organization by schemata: mental templates that help organize information into a concept
  • Organization by script: an organized body of information about actions, events, or procedures

Stage Three: Interpretation and Evaluation

  • Perception influenced by experiences, needs, wants, values, beliefs, and expectations
  • Leads to perceiving what we want to perceive, rather than what is really there
  • Can lead to failure to perceive what we don't want to perceive

Impression Formation Process

  • Primacy effect: tendency to attend to the first pieces of information about someone
  • Recency effect: tendency to attend to the most recent information about someone
  • Consistency: people expect certain things to go together and are surprised when they don't
  • Attribution of control: attributing motives based on reasons, beware of self-serving bias, overattribution, and fundamental attribution error

Self-Concept and Interpersonal Communication

  • Self-concept: how we think and feel about ourselves
  • Social comparison: discovering the self through how others treat and react to us
  • Self-awareness: knowing our strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, and feelings
  • Interpersonal perception: the process of deciding what people are like and giving meaning to their actions

Illusions and Perceptions

  • Illusions can trick our senses and happen in communication when there's a difference between what we expect and what really is
  • Examples of illusions: optical illusions, reading words with incorrect spelling

Increasing Accuracy in Impression Formation

  • Avoid processing errors: beware of six perceptual concepts
  • Analyze impressions: recognize your own role in perception, avoid early conclusions
  • Perceptual checking: describe what you hear or see, seek confirmation
  • Reduce uncertainty: increase cultural sensitivity, beware of just world hypothesis
