The Self in Interpersonal Communication
- Self-concept is an image of oneself, consisting of feelings, thoughts, strengths, weaknesses, abilities, limitations, aspirations, and worldview.
Sources of Self-Concept
- Others' images: Looking at how others reveal themselves to you, through social media, online influence, and significant individuals in your life.
- Social comparison: Comparing oneself with others, and interpreting their reactions to you.
- Cultural teachings: Learning from parents, teachers, and the media.
- Self-evaluation: Reacting to your own behavior, and evaluating your own strengths and weaknesses.
Self-Awareness
- Self-awareness refers to knowing oneself, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, feelings, and personalities.
- The Johari Window model emphasizes that self-awareness is not separate, but interactive parts of a whole.
- The four quadrants of the Johari Window are:
- The Open Self
- The Blind Self
- The Hidden Self
- The Unknown Self
- Each person's Johari Window is different, and can vary from one time to another and from one interpersonal situation to another.

Self-Esteem
- Self-esteem refers to a measure of how valuable you think you are.

- Cognitive self-esteem: thinking about your strengths and weaknesses.
- Affective self-esteem: feeling about yourself in light of your strengths and weaknesses.
- Behavioral self-esteem: verbal and non-verbal behaviors like disclosures, assertiveness, and conflict strategies.
