Internet of Everything (IoE) Overview

Networking Fundamentals

• Ethernet is used to connect multiple systems to develop a Local Area Network (LAN).
• There are many types of Ethernet, but Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet are two main types commonly used.

Intranet

• An intranet is a private enterprise network designed to support an organization's employees to communicate, collaborate, and perform their roles.
• The prefix "intra" means "internal", implying an intranet is designed for internal communications.

Ethernet vs Internet vs Intranet

• Ethernet is a collective term for technologies that allow for the interconnection of computers.
• Internet is the name used to refer to the global web of interconnected computers.
• Ethernet and its compatible standard make the Internet possible.
• Internet is a worldwide interconnection of all smart communication devices with a valid address.
• Intranet is a privately owned part of the internet, allowing only a selected number of addresses to communicate.

Internet of Things (IoT)

• IoT describes the network of physical objects—“things”—embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.

5G Technology

• 5G is the next generation wireless network technology, expected to change the way people live and work.
• It will be faster and able to handle more connected devices than the existing 4G LTE network.

Internet of Everything (IoE)

• IoE is bringing together people, data, process, and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable.
• It involves people, data, process, and things connected to the Internet and each other for intelligent decision making.

Network Components

• Network infrastructure contains three broad categories of network components: devices, media, and services.

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model

• The OSI model groups communication functions into seven logical layers.
• The seven layers are: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.

OSI Layers

• Physical Layer: generates and detects signals to transmit and receive data over a network medium.
• Data Link Layer: organizes data received from the network layer into frames that contain error-checking routines.

Intermediary Network Devices

• Router: connects two networks together, usually a Local Area Network (LAN) to a Wide Area Network (WAN), with additional "smart" software with security features.
• Switch: handles multiple communications between the computers attached, provides one-to-one or one-to-many connections, and uses a MAC address table to send packets.
• Hub: handles one communication between the computers attached, provides one-to-many connections, and uses the interface of the device to send the packets.
