Information Technology Lecture 8: The Internet and WWW
-
The lecture covered FCT10010 Information Technology, specifically Lecture 8, focusing on the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW).
-
Five Basic Computer Operations: Input, Processing, Storage, Output, and Communications.
Lecture 8 Outline
- The Internet and WWW - the differences: Discusses the distinction between the Internet and the World Wide Web.
- The Internet: Explores connecting to the internet, explaining how the internet works.
- The World Wide Web (WWW): Covers website design, types of websites, and other internet services.
Connecting to the Internet
- Internet Access Providers (ISP): A local or national company offering internet access for a fee.
- Examples: TM (Malaysia), Speedy (Indonesia), EarthLink (USA).
- Commercial Online Services: Companies providing internet access plus additional specialized content (news, games, etc.).
- Examples: CompuServe, AOL (America Online).
- Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs): Enable wireless devices to access the internet via Wi-Fi hotspots at various public locations.

How Does Internet Work?
- The Internet is a vast network of interconnected smaller networks.
- Client/Server Networks:
- Client: A computer requesting data or services.
- Server: A central computer providing requested data/services.
- Routers: Determine the path for data between users and servers.
Internet Communications
- Protocols: Rules that govern data transmission for consistent format exchange.
- The internet protocol is TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).
- TCP/IP: Breaks data into packets for transmission and reassembles packets in the correct order. IP addresses data packets to their final destination. Packets don't always follow the same route, using the same IP address.
Internet Protocol (IP) Address
- Every device on the internet has a unique IP address.
- Used to identify devices on the internet.
- Consists of four sets of numbers (0-255) separated by decimals.
- Dynamic IP addresses change each time a user connects to an ISP. Static IP addresses remain constant.
Other Internet Communication Elements
- Dynamic IP: Temporarily assigned by an ISP. If not in use, automatically assigned to a different device. Generally simpler devices use dynamic IPs.
- Static IP: Typically used by servers and other crucial equipment. More stable devices use static IPs.
World Wide Web (WWW)
- The WWW is multimedia-based and utilizes the Internet's infrastructural setup for various activities like email and instant messaging.
- Web and Internet are not the same.
Web Browser/Browser
- Software enabling users to locate and access various web components.
- Examples include Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari.
Website
- A location on a computer on the web.
- Has a unique address (URL).
- A URL combines letters and numbers to indicate a website or webserver.
- Websites often consist of multiple powerful computers which host (web servers).
Web Pages
- Documents on the WWW with various features like text, images, sound, and video.
- A website is composed of a web page or collection of web pages.
- The first web page of a website is called the home page.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
- A unique address for a website or webpage.
- Has four elements: web protocol, domain name, web folder, and web page.
Website Design
- HyperText Markup Language (HTML): A format language used for constructing websites via special instructions called "tags" or "markups". Used to specify document structure, formatting, and link multimedia elements.
Types of Websites
- Web Portals: Gateway websites with various resources and services (e.g., shopping malls, news, email, weather).
