Study Notes
Internet Access
- To access the internet, users need to subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and pay a registration fee.
- Costs for internet access are generally separate from the costs of network infrastructure and phone bills.
- Internet Service Providers route internet traffic and the cost is usually that of a local telephone call.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
- Examples of ISPs include Telecom companies (MTN, Airtel, etc.)
- ISPs are commercial organizations with permanent connections to the internet that sell temporary connections to subscribers.
Web Browsers
- Web browsers are necessary to access the World Wide Web (WWW).
- Web browser software connects users to remote computers, opens and transfers files, and displays text and images.
- Examples of web browsers: Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.
Client-Server Model
- The client-server model is a distributed application framework that divides tasks between servers and clients.
- Clients send requests to servers to access services made available by the server.
- The web operates on a client-server model:
- Web servers host web pages.
- Web clients (users) access these pages through web browsers.
Benefits of Client-Server Computing
- Centralized data management simplifies data protection and user authorization.
- Easy to add new resources without interrupting the network.
- Data can be accessed efficiently regardless of the physical location of clients and servers.
- Clients and servers can be independently upgraded, replaced, and relocated with minimal impact.
- Data transfer in client-server systems is platform-agnostic.
IP Addressing
- Every computer on the internet has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address.
- There are two major versions of IP addressing: IPv4 and IPv6.
- IPv4 addresses are formatted as four numbers (0-255) separated by periods (e.g., 106.29.242.17).
- IPv6 addresses are formatted in hexadecimal and offer a much larger address space.
Domain Name Addressing
- Domain names are user-friendly, human-readable names associated with specific IP addresses.
- Domain Name System (DNS) software translates domain names to IP addresses.
- Domain names are hierarchical and read from right to left (e.g., www.example.com).
- Most domain names have three or four parts.
