History of Multimedia

  • But these traditional mediums are inflexible, meaning that the content cannot be changed or interacted with by the audience

Classification of Multimedia

  • Linear: Non-interactive, users have no control over content (e.g., movies, non-interactive lectures)
  • Non-Linear: Interactive, users have control over content and navigation (e.g., games, courseware)
  • Interactive Multimedia: A computer-delivered system allowing the user to control, combine, and manipulate different types of media like text, sound, video, and computer graphics. Control is given as to when and what the user views
  • Hypertext: A nonlinear system where users navigate through linked sections of text within a document or across different documents.
  • Hypermedia: An extension of hypertext that also incorporates graphics, audio, video, plain text, and hyperlinks. A hyperlink is a link that leads to another part within the same document or to another document

Components of Multimedia

  • Text: Common for communication, used in content, menus, navigation buttons, short message services (SMS), email
  • Graphics/Images(Types):
    • Bitmap: Real images from scanners/cameras, large memory requirements, not editable
    • Vector: Computer-drawn graphics, small memory requirements, editable
  • Audio: Speech, music, sound effects, websites/presentations often include audio files (musical, voiceover/spoken)
    • Analog: Original sound signal.
    • Digital: Sound stored digitally by the computer
  • Video: Moving pictures accompanied by sound, useful for showcasing real-world objects briefly, commonly used in multimedia applications
