What is Multimedia?
- A representation of information in an attractive and interactive manner utilizing text, audio, video, graphics, and animation
- Composed of "multi" (many) and "media" (means for conveying information)
- Medium (singular): refers to a different type of data representation such as text, images, graphics, audio, and video
What is Multimedia (continued)?
- Different perspectives exist regarding multimedia according to context and user
- A media student may use it for presentations
- A computer student for projects or simulations
- A mobile user through services like MMS and WhatsApp
- A PC vendor for graphics adapters and sound cards
History of Multimedia
- Traditional mass media existed before the internet (newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards)
- These media formats (e.g., television, newspapers, radio, cinema) are considered multimedia experiences due to the combination of different kinds of data
- But these traditional mediums are inflexible, meaning that the content cannot be changed or interacted with by the audience
Classification of Multimedia
- Linear: Non-interactive, users have no control over content (e.g., movies, non-interactive lectures)
- Non-Linear: Interactive, users have control over content and navigation (e.g., games, courseware)
- Interactive Multimedia: A computer-delivered system allowing the user to control, combine, and manipulate different types of media like text, sound, video, and computer graphics. Control is given as to when and what the user views
- Hypertext: A nonlinear system where users navigate through linked sections of text within a document or across different documents.
- Hypermedia: An extension of hypertext that also incorporates graphics, audio, video, plain text, and hyperlinks. A hyperlink is a link that leads to another part within the same document or to another document
Components of Multimedia
- Text: Common for communication, used in content, menus, navigation buttons, short message services (SMS), email
- Graphics/Images(Types):
- Bitmap: Real images from scanners/cameras, large memory requirements, not editable
- Vector: Computer-drawn graphics, small memory requirements, editable
- Audio: Speech, music, sound effects, websites/presentations often include audio files (musical, voiceover/spoken)
- Analog: Original sound signal.
- Digital: Sound stored digitally by the computer
- Video: Moving pictures accompanied by sound, useful for showcasing real-world objects briefly, commonly used in multimedia applications
- Animation: Giving inanimate objects the appearance of movement, creating static images that appear moving. GIFs are graphic image files that display still images/short sequences to appear as motion
Applications of Multimedia
- Business: Sales/Marketing Presentations, advertising, product demos, voicemail, staff training
- Education: Multimedia learning packages/Courseware, simulations of lab experiments, live presentations (speeches, webinars), e-learning programs, information searching, digital libraries
- Entertainment: Video games, movie making, audio and video on demand, animated films and cartoons
- Home: Basic Television Services, digital audio, video on demand (VOD), financial transactions, interactive multiplayer/single-player games, E-newspapers, E-magazines, digital multimedia libraries
- Public Places: Trade shows, libraries, railway stations, museums, malls, airports, banks, hotels, exhibitions. Often in the form of kiosks; information kiosks allow user interaction. Additional applications could be smart cards and security
