Inflammation Definition
- Inflammation is a response to various stimuli, excluding those that cause sudden cell death.
Types of Inflammation Causes
- Chemical causes: acids, caustics, and toxins
- Physical causes: excessive heat, cold, and ray burns
- Mechanical causes: contusions, sprain, fracture, and dislocations
- Bacterial causes: most dangerous due to local tissue destruction and generalized toxin effects
- Parasitic causes: external and internal parasites, such as otodectes cyanotis, onchocerca reticulata, Thelazia lacrimalis, and Gastrophilus equi
Endogenous Causes of Inflammation
- Tissue necrosis
- Thrombosis
- Infarction
- Massive hemorrhages
- Neoplasms, such as carcinoma and sarcoma
Purposes of Inflammation
- Maintain tissue nutrition at the highest level
- Dilute and wash away toxins in the affected part
- Destroy toxins by supplying antitoxins to the affected part
- Destroy bacteria by supplying leucocytes to the inflamed part
- Remove degenerated cells through phagocytosis
- Repair damaged tissues as close to normal as possible
