Infectious and Inflammatory Disorders
- Most common respiratory tract infections are highly contagious, with peak incidence in September, late January, and late April.
- Viral strains associated with infections include rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, coronaviruses, and respiratory syncytial virus.
- Infections spread when hands and fingers pick up the virus from contaminated surfaces and carry it to eyes, mucous membranes of the susceptible host.
- Local inflammation results in swelling of nasal passages, hyperactivity of mucus-secreting glands, and only produces immunity to the individual virus.
- Signs of inflammation include red and boggy nasal mucus membranes.
- Swelling, vasodilation, and secretions cause nasal congestion.
- Common symptoms include:
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Coughing
- Coryza
- Less frequent symptoms include:
- Low-grade fever
- Headache
- Malaise
- Muscle aches
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
- Primary cause of respiratory illness among infants and children.
- Also known as the common cold amongst older children and adults.
- Can be severe or fatal in immunocompromised individuals.
- Transmitted through direct contact with respiratory secretions or contaminated surfaces.
- The incubation period is 4-6 days.
- Manifestations are similar to a URI in adults.
- Older adults may experience lower respiratory infection, fever, or pneumonia.
- Infants may experience a URI, but it often progresses to pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and tracheobronchiolitis.
Treatment of RSV
- Hydration and mobilization of respiratory secretions are crucial.
- Aerosolized ribavirin (Virazole) may be prescribed for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
Therapies
- Rest and home remedies for symptom relief are recommended.
- Complementary therapies include:
- Echinacea
- Garlic
- Vitamin C
- Zinc
- Aromatherapy
