Language of the Union
- Business in Parliament is transacted in Hindi or English (Article 120)
- Members can address the House in their mother-tongue if they cannot express themselves in Hindi or English
- After 15 years from the commencement of the Constitution, Parliament can decide to only use Hindi
Language of the Legislature
- Business in the Legislature of a State is transacted in the official language or languages of the State, Hindi, or English (Article 210)
- Members can address the House in their mother-tongue if they cannot express themselves in the above languages
- After 15 years from the commencement of the Constitution, the use of English may be omitted, except in some States where the period is extended to 25 or 40 years
Official Language of the Union
- The official language of the Union is Hindi in Devnagari script (Article 343)
- International form of Indian numerals is used for official purposes
- English language can be used for official purposes for 15 years from the commencement of the Constitution
- President can authorize the use of Hindi and Devnagari numerals in addition to English and international form of Indian numerals during this period
