Importance of Healthy Eating During Adolescence
- Nutrition is the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other vital nutrients for life.
- Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. High BMI can indicate high body fat, potentially leading to health problems, but doesn't diagnose health.
- Vitamins are organic compounds essential for normal growth and nutrition. The body cannot synthesize them.
- Nutrients are substances that provide nourishment, necessary for growth and life maintenance.
- Yoga is a type of exercise involving various body positions for flexibility, breathing improvement and relaxation.
"Pinggang Pinoy" Food Guide
- Developed by the Department of Health, Science and Technology, and Food and Nutrition Research Institute.
- Presents a food guide plate model to aid in better understanding food group quantities per meal.
- Comprised of 3 food groups: Go, Grow, and Glow.
- Go foods (17%): Grains and starches like bread, rice, pasta and oats, providing energy.
- Grow Foods (33%): Foods that help with growth including milk products, beans, seeds, nuts. Fish, meat, eggs (Good protein sources).
- Glow Foods (33%): Fruits and vegetables, protect the body from diseases, containing Vitamins and Minerals.
General Nutrition Guidelines
- Eat a variety of foods daily for health.
- Consume fish, lean meat, poultry or beans, as good protein, vitamin B, iron, and zinc sources.
- Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and root crops for vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This helps prevent chronic diseases.
