Impaction of teeth occurs when there is an obstruction by some physical ______

barriers

In Class I classification of impacted mandibular 3rd molars, there is sufficient space between the ramus of the mandible and the distal surface of the second ______

molar

Rotation of the tooth bud is one of the causes of impaction due to lack of ______

space

POSITION B - Highest portion of the impacted molar is below the occlusal line but above the cervical line of the second molar. In relation to the position of the long axis of the impacted mandibular 3rd molar with the 2nd molar, the classification is ____________.

Mesioangular
Signup and view all the answers

Relative depth of the impacted 3rd molar in the bone determines the position classification. Position C refers to the scenario where the lowest portion of the crown of the impacted molar is at or above the cervical line of the second molar. Position A is when the lowest portion of the crown of the impacted 3rd molar is in line with the occlusal plane of the second molar, making it ____________.

Vertical
Signup and view all the answers

The relationship of the impacted maxillary 3rd molar to the maxillary sinus is crucial. Position B indicates that the lowest portion of the crown of the impacted molar is between the occlusal line and cervical line of the second molar. The classification is ____________.

Distoangular
Signup and view all the answers

In cases of SINUS APPROXIMATION (SA), there is no bone or a very thin partition of the bone between the maxillary 3rd molar and maxillary sinus. If there is NO SINUS APPROXIMATION (NSA), it means 2mm or more of bone exist between the impacted maxillary 3rd molar and the maxillary sinus, indicating the ____________ of the condition.

The position of the impacted third molar in relation to the long axis of the 2nd molar is critical for treatment planning. The classification can be Vertical, Horizontal, Mesioangular, Distoangular, Inverted, Buccoangular, or ____________.

Study Notes

Impaction of Teeth

  • Impaction refers to individual teeth that are unerupted due to a lack of eruptive force or obstruction by physical barriers.
  • Impaction can occur in various teeth, including maxillary premolars, central incisors, lateral incisors, and third molars.

Classification of Impacted Mandibular 3rd Molars

  • Classified based on the relation of the impacted 3rd molar to the ramus of the mandible and the 2nd molar.
  • A. Class I: sufficient space between the ramus and the distal surface of the 2nd molar, allowing for accommodation of the mesiodistal diameter of the 3rd molar crown.
  • B. Class II: insufficient space between the ramus and the distal surface of the 2nd molar, making it less than the mesiodistal diameter of the 3rd molar crown.
  • C. Class III: the 3rd molar is located within the ramus of the mandible.

Position of Impacted 3rd Molar

  • Classified in relation to the occlusal line of the 2nd molar.
  • A. Position A: highest portion of the impacted molar is in level with or above the occlusal line of the 2nd molar.
  • B. Position B: highest portion of the impacted molar is below the occlusal line but above the cervical line of the 2nd molar.
  • C. Position C: highest portion of the impacted molar is below the cervical line of the 2nd molar.

Orientation of Impacted 3rd Molar

  • Classified in relation to the long axis of the 2nd molar.
  • Vertical: parallel to the 2nd molar.
  • Horizontal: perpendicular to the 2nd molar.
  • Inverted: opposite direction of the 2nd molar.
  • Mesioangular: angled towards the mesial aspect of the 2nd molar.
  • Distoangular: angled towards the distal aspect of the 2nd molar.
  • Buccoangular: angled towards the buccal aspect of the 2nd molar.
  • Linguoangular: angled towards the lingual aspect of the 2nd molar.

Classification of Impacted Maxillary 3rd Molars

  • Classified based on the relative depth of the impacted 3rd molar in the bone.
    1. Position A: lowest portion of the crown of the impacted 3rd molar is in line with the occlusal plane of the 2nd molar.
    1. Position B: lowest portion of the crown of the impacted 3rd molar is between the occlusal line and cervical line of the 2nd molar.
    1. Position C: lowest portion of the crown of the impacted 3rd molar is at or above the cervical line of the 2nd molar.

Sinus Approximation

  • Classified based on the relationship of the impacted maxillary 3rd molar to the maxillary sinus.
  • SA (Sinus Approximation): no bone or a very thin partition of bone exists between the maxillary 3rd molar and maxillary sinus.
  • NSA (No Sinus Approximation): 2mm or more of bone exists between the impacted maxillary 3rd molar and the maxillary sinus.

Classification of Impacted Maxillary Canine

  • Classified based on the orientation of the impacted maxillary canine.
  • a. Class I: horizontal, vertical, or semi-vertical orientation.
  • b. Class II: horizontal, vertical, or semi-vertical orientation.
