Study Notes
Humoral Immunity
- Mediated by B-cells which produce antibodies to combat antigens.
- Antibodies specifically recognize epitopes on antigens.
- Antibodies are also known as immunoglobulins (Ig).
- There are five classes of antibodies: IgM, IgD, IgG, IgA, and IgE.
- Key functions of antibodies include neutralization of pathogens, opsonization for enhanced phagocytosis, and activation of the complement system.
Cell-Mediated Immunity
- Involves T-cells which have specific cell surface receptors known as TCRs (T Cell Receptors).
- TCRs detect antigenic epitopes that are associated with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules on cell surfaces.
- There are three main types of T-cells, each serving distinct roles:
- Cytotoxic T cells that kill infected or cancerous cells.
- Helper T cells that assist in activating other immune cells.
- Regulatory T cells that modulate immune system activity to prevent excessive responses.
Lymphocyte Function
- B-cells recognize antigens through unique receptors and produce antibodies for defense.
- T-cells recognize antigen fragments bound to MHC molecules, which is crucial for their activation.
Immune Response Overview
- The adaptive immune response comprises two main arms: humoral and cell-mediated immunity.
- Humoral immunity requires B-cells and the antibodies they produce, often needing T-cell assistance.
Target of Immune Response
- The immune system can target various threats:
- Pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and multicellular parasites.
- Tumors through immune surveillance processes.
- Self-tissues or organs during autoimmune disorders.
- Allergens leading to hypersensitivity reactions.
- Transplanted tissues or organs, involved in host-versus-graft and graft-versus-host reactions.
Immune System Cells
- B-lymphocytes (B-cells) are primarily responsible for antibody production.
- T-lymphocytes (T-cells) provide cytotoxic, helper, and regulatory immune functions.
