Immune Stimulants
- Interferons are proteins that modify the immune response, stimulating interferon receptor sites to produce antiviral proteins which prevent viruses from entering cells.
- Interferons are used to treat Hepatitis B and C.
- Common side effects include flu-like symptoms, bone marrow suppression, cardiotoxicity, dyspnea, alopecia, and GI upset.
- Monitor CBC levels, cardiac and liver function throughout therapy.
Antiviral Agents
- Protease inhibitors block protease activity to render HIV particles unable to fuse with and inject themselves into a cell.
- Protease inhibitors are used to treat Hepatitis C.
- Protease inhibitors can cause various gastrointestinal effects, changes in liver function, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, fat redistribution, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
- Antiviral drugs inhibit viral DNA replication by competing with viral substrates to form shorter, ineffective DNA chains.
- Antiviral drugs are used to treat Hepatitis C.
- Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, depression, paresthesia, neuropathy, rash, hair loss, and renal dysfunction.
Supplements
- Thiamine is a vitamin that replaces deficiencies and is required for carbohydrate metabolism.
- Thiamine is used to treat deficiencies.
- Thiamine has extremely minimal reactions or side effects.
