Study Notes
Sentences and Sentence Fragments
- A sentence has a subject and a predicate, expressing a complete thought.
- Sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a period, question mark, or exclamation point.
- Subject: Identifies who or what performs the action.
- Predicate: States what the subject does, is, has, or feels.
- A sentence fragment is incomplete; it lacks a subject, predicate, or both.
- Fragments can be corrected by adding the missing subject, or predicate, or attached to another sentence.
- Introductory phrases or subordinate clauses often require a comma in correct sentences.
Identifying Sentences
- To identify a sentence, determine if it has a subject and predicate, expressing a complete thought.
- Incomplete thoughts are sentence fragments.
- Example of a fragment: Is often called “Evita.” (Needs a subject)
Rewriting Sentences
- Correct any sentence fragments by adding the missing subject or predicate.
- Attach fragments to complete sentences when necessary.
- Example fragment correction: If he could. He would have played baseball. (Corrected: If he could, he would have played baseball.)
Subjects and Predicates
- Complete sentences have a subject and predicate.
- Subject: Tells what the sentence is about.
- Predicate: Tells what the subject does, is, has, or feels.
- Complete Subject: All the words describing the person or thing performing the action in the sentence.
- Simple Subject: The main word or words in the complete subject.
- Complete Predicate: The verb(s) and all words that modify or complete the verb in its meaning.
- Simple Predicate: The verb or verb phrase.
Identifying Complete and Simple Subjects/Predicates
- To identify a subject, ask: Who or what is doing something or being talked about?
- The subject is not part of a prepositional phrase; prepositional phrases modify other words or phrases.
- Subjects are not prepositional phrases.
- Find the complete subject by identifying all the words that refer to the person or thing performing the action. Underline the simple subject.
- Find the complete predicate by identifying the verb(s) and words that modify or complete the verb's meaning. Underline the simple predicate (including any helping verbs) twice.
Hard-to-Find Subjects
- In sentences beginning with "here" or "there," the subject comes after the verb.
- Subjects are never part of a prepositional phrase.
- To identify a subject in a question, rephrase as a statement.
- The subject "you" is unstated in Commands and requests (e.g., Point your toes.)
Compound Subjects and Verbs
- A compound subject is two or more subjects joined by "and," "or," or "but" (or similar conjunction pairs).
- A compound verb is two or more verbs joined by the same conjunctions.
- Subjects and verbs in a sentence must agree in number (singular or plural)
- Compound Subjects with “and” usually use a plural verb.
- Compound subjects with "or/nor" the verb agrees with the subject closest to it.
Objects
- A direct object receives the action of the verb; its role is described by the question "Whom?" or "What?" after the verb.
- Only sentences with action verbs can have direct objects.
- Sentences with linking verbs (e.g., is, are, was, were, appear, become, etc.) do not have direct objects.
- A sentence can have more than one direct object.
Subject Complements
- A subject complement follows a linking verb and renames or describes the subject. Types are predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives.
- Predicate nominative: A noun or pronoun that identifies the subject.
- Predicate adjective: An adjective that describes the subject.
- Linking verbs need a subject complement.
