Study Notes
Cubital Fossa
- Cubital fossa is a triangular hollow situated on the front of the elbow, homologous to the popliteal fossa of the lower limb.
- Boundaries:
- Medially: Lateral border of the pronator teres
- Laterally: Medial border of the brachioradialis
- Base: Imaginary line joining the front of the two epicondyles of the humerus, directed upwards
- Apex: Area where brachioradialis crosses the pronator teres muscle, directed downwards
Roof of the Cubital Fossa
- Formed by:
- Skin
- Superficial fascia containing the median cubital vein
- Deep fascia
- Bicipital aponeurosis
- Contains:
- Median cubital vein joining cephalic and basilic veins
- Lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm along with cephalic vein
- Medial cutaneous nerve of the forearm along with basilic vein
Floor of the Cubital Fossa
- Formed by:
- Brachialis muscle
- Supinator muscle
- Contains:
- Posterior interosseous nerve or deep branch of the radial nerve
- Branches to extensor carpi radialis brevis and supinator
Contents of the Cubital Fossa
- In order from medial to lateral side:
- Median nerve
- Terminal part of brachial artery bifurcating into radial and ulnar arteries
- Tendon of biceps brachii muscle
- Radial nerve on a deeper plane on the lateral side of biceps tendon
- Ulnar artery goes deep to both heads of pronator teres and runs downwards and medially
