Hydrocarbon Derivatives with Oxygen
- Hydrocarbon derivatives containing oxygen, including aldehydes and ketones, have a carbon-oxygen double bond.
- These derivatives are considered simpler than alcohols and ethers, which have carbon-oxygen single bonds.
IUPAC Rules for Naming Aldehydes
- Rule 1: Select the longest chain that includes the carbonyl group as the parent carbon chain.
- Rule 2: Rename the parent chain by changing the -e ending of the corresponding alkane name to -al.
- Rule 3: Number the parent chain by assigning the number 1 to the carbonyl carbon atom, but do not include the number in the name.
- Rule 4: Identify and locate any substituents and add this information to the front of the parent chain name.
- Rule 5: When an aldehyde functional group is attached to a carbon ring, name the ring and add the suffix -carbaldehyde.
Examples of Aldehydes and Ketones
- Assign IUPAC names to given aldehydes.
- Assign IUPAC names to given ketones.
