Human Rights: Civil and Political Rights (First Generation)
- Civil rights are inherent to human beings, enabling a fulfilling life. Laws protect these across all individuals regardless of differences in race, ethnicity, religion, etc. They empower individuals to pursue personal interests.
- Examples of civil rights: marriage, family creation, freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, freedom of expression, nationality, movement, life, liberty, and personal safety, equality before the law, the right to a fair trial, rights to a name and legal personality, presumption of innocence for accused individuals, freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention, and exile, and prohibition against imprisonment due to contractual obligations (debtor's imprisonment).
Human Rights: Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (Second Generation)
- These rights empower individuals and groups to access essential services.
- Examples of economic, social, and cultural rights: the right to work, education, health care, social security, establishing and joining trade unions, freedom of scientific research and protection of scientific production, equal and fair pay, social security in cases of unemployment, disability, widowhood, or old age.
Human Rights: Collective Rights
