    Study Notes

    Digestive System

    • The digestive system has several parts that work together to break down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed and utilized by the body.

    Salivary Glands

    • There are three pairs of salivary glands: Parotid gland, Submandibular gland, and Sublingual gland.
    • Saliva produced by these glands contains enzymes and proteins, including Salivary Amylase, which breaks down starch.

    Esophagus

    • The esophagus is a 25cm long muscle tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
    • Its primary function is to transport food from the mouth to the stomach.
    • The upper part of the esophagus secretes mucous to aid in the passage of food.

    Stomach

    • The stomach has gastric glands that secrete gastric juice, creating an acidic environment with a pH between 1.5-3.5.
    • This acidity is necessary for the action of Pepsin enzyme, which breaks down proteins.
    • The stomach needs a mucosal barrier to protect itself from the acidic environment, which is achieved through mucus secretion.

    Large Intestine

    • The large intestine consists of four parts: Transverse colon, Descending colon, Sigmoid colon (S-shaped), Rectum, and Anal canal (terminal part of the large intestine, just above the anus).
