    Study Notes

    Human Computer Interaction

    • Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is the study, planning and design of how people and computers work together to best satisfy a person's needs.
    • HCI designers must consider a variety of factors including what people want, expect, limitations and abilities as well as how their perceptual and information processing systems work.
    • Technical characteristics and limitations of computer hardware and software must be considered.

    Relevant Disciplines

    • HCI is a cross-disciplinary field that incorporates psychology, computer science, ergonomics, linguistics and design.

    Applications of HCI

    • Everyday: ATMs, information kiosks, railway ticket machines, vending machines and more.
    • Education
    • Industry and business
    • Accessibility: building accessible systems for people with impairments.
    • Virtual Reality
    • Voice Search

    User Interface (UI) Design

    • UI design is a subset of HCI.
    • UI design focuses on anticipating user needs and ensuring the interface is easy to access, understand and use.

    UI Components

    • The UI is how people see, hear, touch, talk to or otherwise understand and direct the computer.
    • UI has two parts: Input (how users communicate their needs to the computer) and Output (how the computer conveys results and requirements to the user).
    • Input: Keyboards, mice, trackballs, fingers (for touch-sensitive screens), voice.
    • Output: Display screens, sound, voice.

    Good Design

    • Good design provides a mix of well-designed input and output that meets user needs, capabilities and limitations.
    • The best interface is one that it not noticed, one that permits the user to focus on the information and task at hand, not the mechanisms used to present the information and perform the task.

    Importance of Good Design

    • A well-designed interface and screen is terribly important to users.
    • It is the window to view the capabilities of the system.
    • It is the vehicle through which critical tasks are presented.
    • These tasks often have a direct impact on an organization’s relations with its customers, and its profitability.

    Bad Design

    • Bad design is frustrating and costly.
    • Medical devices, airplane accidents, and nuclear disasters are just three domains where user interface errors have caused serious injury and many deaths.

    Benefits of Good Design

    • Attempting to improve screen clarity and readability by making screens less crowded resulted in screen users becoming 20% more productive.
    • Reforming a series of screens following a good design methodology resulted in screen users finding it easier to use and completing transactions in less time with fewer errors.

    Objective

    • Understand the considerations that must be applied to the interface and screen design process.
    • Understand the rationale and rules for an effective interface design methodology.
    • Identify the components of graphical and Web interfaces and screens, including: windows, menus, and controls.
    • Design and organize graphical screens and Web pages to encourage the fastest and most accurate comprehension and execution of screen features.
    • Explore the foundations of UX design.
    • Understand User Centered Design for designing, prototyping and evaluating interfaces.

    Design for People

    • People’s tasks, goals, and values drive development.
    • Work with users throughout the process.
    • Assess decisions from the vantage point of users, their work, and their environment.
    • Pay attention to people’s abilities and situation.
    • Talk to the actual experts.

    Importance of a User Interface

    • Usability strongly affects how software is perceived because the user interface is the means by which the software presents itself to the world.
    • Ease of use, customer service and ease of installation are important factors when purchasing technology products.
    • Usable software sells.
    • Unusable software doesn’t sell.
    • User Interfaces are hard to design.

    Usability

    • Usability measures how well users can use the system’s functionality.
    • Usability has several dimensions:
      • Learnability: Is it easy to learn?
      • Efficiency: Once learned, is it easy to use?
      • Safety: Are errors few and recoverable?

    User Interface Design

    • The User is always right.
    • Don’t blame the user for what goes wrong.
    • If users consistently make mistakes with some part of your interface, take it as a sign that your interface is wrong, not that the users are dumb.
