Study Notes
- Exam 3 date: April 11th
-
- Human Brain contains 4 major portions: cerebrum, diencephalon, brain stem, cerebellum
Cerebrum
- Responsible for conscious thought processes
Diencephalon
- Responsible for body's homeostatic processes
- Collects information and directs incoming information
- Provides oversight of incoming memories
Brain Stem
- Makes connections between higher portions of the brain, the spinal cord, and the cerebellum.
Cerebellum
- Coordinates movements of the body
- Dorsal/posterior to the brain stem
Brain and Spinal Cord
- Wrapped by meninges
- Consists of 3 layers of cranial meninges made of connective tissue to support and protect soft tissue of the brain:
- Pia mater: thin/transparent, innermost layer of alveolar connective tissue; the subarachnoid space is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to support and protect the brain and help deliver nutrients and remove waste.
- Arachnoid space
- Dura mater: outermost layer, consists of two layers of dense irregular connective tissue: a meningeal layer and periosteal layer
Cerebrum
- Consists of the cerebral cortex, which is a layer of gray matter
- Gray matter contains billions of neuron bodies & unmyelinated axons
- Neurons form the "conscious mind"
- Gyri: folds of tissue that make up the cerebral cortex
- Sulci: narrow grooves between folds
- The pattern of gyri & sulci increases the surface area of the cerebral cortex to make room for billions of neurons
- Cerebral hemispheres: left and right sides of the cerebrum
- Longitudinal fissure: the midsagittal groove of the left and right sides
5 Regions of the Cerebrum Hemisphere
- Frontal lobe: motor commands, movement for speech, intellect & personality
- Precentral gyrus: somatosensory information
- Parietal lobe: conscious processing of touch and body position
- Postcentral gyrus: somatosensory information
