Body Parts and Functions
Legs
- The leg is divided into sections: thigh, shin, knee, ankle, foot, and toe
- Thigh: above knee, supports weight of upper body, allows leg to flex and move
- Shin: lower leg, under the knee, flexes the foot, stabilizes the ankle joint
- Knee: between thigh and shin, bends the leg, supports weight of upper body
- Ankle: between foot and shin, rotates the foot, connects the foot to the leg
- Foot: bottom of the leg, provides balance while walking, distributes body weight
- Toe: end of the foot, provides balance while walking, distributes body weight
- Heel: back of the foot, distributes body weight
Torso
- Chest: top of the torso, protects lungs and heart, assists in arm movement
- Abdomen: middle of the torso, stabilizes the body, protects internal organs
- Belly: middle of the belly button, connects a baby's umbilical cord to its mother's placenta
- Torso back: back of the torso, stabilizes the body, protects vertebrae
- Buttocks: back of the torso, just above the legs, cushions the body when sitting
- Waist: middle of the torso, stabilizes the body, allows the upper body to bend to the lower half
- Hips: lower sides of the torso, stabilizes the body, assists in hip and thigh movement
Nervous System
- Brain: processes sensory signals, sends messages to the rest of the body, regulates automatic body functions
- Spinal cord: transmits signals to the brain from other parts of the body, transmits signals from the brain to other parts of the body
- Peripheral nervous system: branches out around the body, connects peripheral nerves to the brain
Urinary System
- Kidneys: rear back of the abdomen, removes waste from the body, balances fluids in the body
- Tubes: between kidneys and bladder, brings urine to the bladder from the kidneys
- Bladder: center of the pelvis, stores urine before urination
- Urethra: end of the bladder, brings urine out of the body during urination
Respiratory System
- Nostrils: end of the nose, inhales air during breathing, exhales carbon dioxide
- Nasal cavity: inside the nose, keeps foreign particles out of the respiratory tract, makes mucus to keep the nose moist
- Oral cavity: middle of the face, inhales air during breathing, exhales carbon dioxide
- Larynx: neck, below the throat, in front of the esophagus, creates speech sounds, protects the airway from choking
- Bronchial tubes: chest, between the trachea tubes and lungs, connects trachea to lungs, brings air into the lungs
- Lungs: chest, behind rib cage, brings oxygen into the body through blood vessels, takes carbon dioxide out of the body through exhalation
Muscular System
- Muscles: enables a body to move
Circulatory System
- Heart: chest, pumps blood throughout the body
- Arteries: various places in the body, carries blood away from the heart, distributes oxygen to different parts of the body
- Veins: various places in the body, brings blood back to the heart, allows deoxygenated blood to regain oxygen
- Capillaries: everywhere in the body, connects small arteries and veins, stores blood to be taken back to the heart
- Blood: distributes oxygen and other nutrients across the body, removes carbon dioxide and other waste from cells
Digestive System
- Mouth: eats, talks, breathes, senses taste
- Nose: breathes, senses smell, keeps out foreign particles
- Face: senses five senses, communicates emotions
- Forehead: above the eyes, forms facial expressions, protects the eyes
- Scalp: top of the head, protects the skull with extra blood vessels
- Eyes: senses sight, protected by eyelids and eyelashes
- Ears: senses hearing, maintains balance
- Hair: regulates body temperature, protects the scalp
- Teeth: chews food to be digested
