Flashcards

Manubrium

The topmost part of the sternum, where the clavicle connects.

Sternoclavicular joint

The joint where the clavicle connects to the sternum.

Acetabulum

The socket on the hip bone where the femur connects.

Patella

The bone at the front of the knee, commonly called the kneecap.

How are the vertebrae of the spine categorized?

The cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) are the neck bones, the thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12) are in the chest, and the lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5) are in the lower back.

What bones connect the forearm to the hand?

The carpal bones (8 in total) connect the radius and ulna to the metacarpal bones, which are numbered 1-5 from thumb to little finger.

What bones are found in the fingers and thumb?

The phalanges are the bones in the fingers and thumb. Each finger has a proximal, middle, and distal phalanx, while the thumb only has a proximal and distal phalanx.

What are the joints in each finger called?

MCPs (metacarpophalangeal joints) are at the base of the fingers, PIPs (proximal interphalangeal joints) are in the middle, and DIPs (distal interphalangeal joints) are at the tip of the fingers.

Study Notes

Skull

  • Consists of cranial and facial bones
  • Cranial bones surround the brain
    • Frontal bone (front)
    • Parietal bone (top)
    • Occipital bone (back)
    • Temporal bone (beside ear)
    • Sphenoid bone (anterior to temporal)
    • Ethmoid bone (midline, posterior to nose, inferior to frontal)
  • Facial bones form face structure
    • Nasal bone (bridge of nose)
    • Maxilla (connects nose, cheekbones, upper teeth)
    • Zygomatic bones (cheekbones)
    • Mandible (jaw bone, connects to temporal at TMJ)
