Study Notes
Cranial Cavity
- The cranial cavity, also known as the intracranial space, is the space formed inside the skull and separates the brain from other facial structures.
Divisions of Cranial Cavity
- The cranial cavity is divided into three fossae:
- Anterior cranial fossa
- Middle cranial fossa
- Posterior cranial fossa
Anterior Cranial Fossa
- The anterior cranial fossa is formed by the following bones:
- 2 parts of the temporal bone
- 3 parts of the parietal bone
Boundaries of Anterior Cranial Fossa
- The floor (central part) of the anterior cranial fossa is formed by the body of the sphenoid bone, which contains:
- Chiasmatic groove (Sulcus)
- Sella turcica, which holds the pituitary gland and is surrounded by the anterior and posterior clinoid processes
- Hypoglossal canal, which transmits the hypoglossal nerve
- Internal acoustic meatus
- Jugular foramen, which transmits the: - Glossopharyngeal (IX) cranial nerve - Vagus (X) cranial nerve - Accessory (XI) cranial nerve - Inferior petrosal sinus - Sigmoid sinus, which becomes the internal jugular vein below the foramen
This quiz covers the cranial cavity in human anatomy, specifically designed for 1st-year dental students. It is based on Lecture 6 by Dr. Nada Hashim Al Jassim, referencing Snell R.S.
