Overview of the Nervous System: Cells, Functions, and Divisions

    • The nervous system is responsible for detecting and responding to changes in the body and external environment.
    • It is divided into the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (autonomic and somatic).
    • Neurons are the specialized cells responsible for transmitting nerve impulses, while glia provide support to neurons.
    • There are between 50 to 100 billion neurons in the brain.
    • Neurons have three main parts: the soma (cell body), dendrites (receive stimulation), and axon (transmit nerve impulses).
    • The point of contact between two neurons or a neuron and an effector organ is called a synapse.
    • Neurotransmitters are released from the presynaptic terminal and taken up in the postsynaptic terminal.
    • Glia can be subdivided into astrocytes (support neurons and form the blood-brain barrier), oligodendrocytes (responsible for myelination in the central nervous system), and microglia (phagocytic function).
    • Types of neurons include Purkinje, pyramidal, motor, bipolar or pseudo-unipolar.
    • The autonomic nervous system is subdivided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
    • The somatic nervous system is made up of cranial and spinal nerves.
    • The nervous system is involved in higher cognitive functions, as well as regulating various functions of organs and systems.
