Firefighter Peer Support Team
- Purpose: to prevent and/or lessen the potential negative impact of stress upon fire department personnel by providing emotional support, information, and assistance.
Definitions
- Firefighter Peer Support Team: a group of Hoffman Estates Fire Department members who respond to firefighters in need of emotional support.
- Peer support firefighters: not trained counselors, but receive specialized training in principles of peer support to recognize signs of emotional distress and take appropriate action.
- Illinois Firefighter Peer Support Network (ILFFPS): a statewide network of over 200 active or retired firefighters trained as peer supporters, assisted by licensed mental health professionals.
Policy
- The Firefighter Peer Support Team:
- Provides confidential, appropriate, and supportive assistance to peers.
- Provides information on additional peer support resources available.
- Provides referrals to mental health professionals.
- Is readily available in the event of a critical incident.
- Keeps up with training and continuing education necessary to the role.
- Provides in-house education to personnel.
Confidentiality
- The Firefighter Peer Support Team honors the confidentiality of those in contact with the team.
- Consultation with an approved clinical mental health professional who will also maintain confidentiality is allowed.
- In the event of immediate danger to self or others, the employee will be directed to an appropriate, professional level of care.
- No identifiable recordkeeping will be completed; only non-specific data will be recorded.
Activation/Notification
- The Firefighter Peer Support Team can be activated by any member in the organization following situations or incidents that have had a high emotional impact on fire department personnel.
- The Fire Chief and Deputy Chief of Operations should be notified whenever the Peer Support Team is activated.
- Firefighter Peer Support Team members can be reached directly via cell phone.
Procedure
- A Peer Support Team member will make contact with the requesting member the same day as requested, or as soon as possible.
- Appropriate action will be determined collectively between the member and the Peer Support Team.
- Follow-up contact will be made as necessary and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
