The Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI)

  • Founded on August 3, 1902, by Delos Reyes who aimed to unite Filipino values and Christianity.
  • Delos Reyes invited Father Aglipay to lead the IFI as the Obispo Maximo, but Aglipay was hesitant due to his loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Aglipay eventually accepted the offer after being criticized by FR. Francisco Foradada for his condition of appointing more Filipino priests.

The Aglipayan Church

  • By 1918, the church had around 1.5 million members out of the total 10 million population of the Philippines.
  • The church was also known as the "Colorums" and had a stronghold in the mountains of Tayabas and Laguna.

The First Labor Group

  • The Union Obrera Democratica Filipinas (UODF) was founded in 1902 as the first labor union in the Philippines.
  • It was a federation of smaller unions of printers, lithographers, cigarmakers, tailors, and shoemakers.
  • The UODF demanded higher wages and worker's benefits, and its newspaper was called "La Redencion del Obrero".

Labor Leadership

  • Dr. Dominador Gomez took over the leadership of the labor movement in 1902.
  • On May 1, 1903, Gomez was arrested under charges of sedition and illegal association.
  • The UODF was later renamed as the Union del Trabajo de Filipinas, but was dissolved in 1907.

Congreso Obrero de Filipinas (COF)

  • Established on May 1, 1913, with its first convention attended by 155 representatives from 35 organizations.
  • The first COF convention lasted for four days.
  • Hermenigildo Cruz was elected as the president of COF, and Primitivo Cruz as the secretary.

Labor Organizations

  • The Legionarios del Trabajo was formed in 1919 as a result of a strike against the Manila Electric Company.
  • The Partido Obrero de Filipinas was founded in 1924 with a strong Marxist influence.
  • The Communist Party of the Philippines (PKP) was established in 1930.

Communist Party of the Philippines

  • Led by Crisanto Evangelista, a Filipino communist politician and labor leader.
  • Evangelista and Bognot attended the Red International of Labor Unions Conference in Moscow.
  • The Communist Party of the Philippines is also associated with the New People's Army.

  • The Committee on Philippine Affairs (JCPA) was established on April 14, 1937, and recommended the grant of political independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946.
