Early Recreation Therapy Assessments (Before the 1950's)
Early Recreation Therapy Assessments (Before the 1950's)
Early recreation therapy assessments primarily focused on psychological coping benefits and assigned clients to different "grades" based on their emotional impact from hospitalization. The primary goal was to understand how hospitalization affected their mental well-being.
Recreational Therapy Assessments in the 1950s
Recreational Therapy Assessments in the 1950s
Recreation therapists started using activities to assess physical function; effectively, the activity itself became the tool for assessing their capabilities. This signifies a shift from purely emotional considerations to a more practical understanding of patients' abilities.
Early RT Objectives

Study Notes
History of Assessment in RT
- The history of assessment in recreational therapy (RT) shows a progression from limited "games therapy" approaches in the pre-1950s era, to more clinical-based assessments in the 1950s, using activities like calisthenics for outcome measurement, and crude observational techniques.
- Early RT assessments focused on psychological coping mechanisms and clients were assigned grades based on their situation in hospitals (Preston, 1932).
- No standardized methods were utilized.
- In the 1950s, assessments became more clinical based, with a focus on the application of recreational therapy. Recreational activity was employed for measuring functional ability. The Recreation WAS used as an assessment tool.
- Assessments in the 1960s focused on a National Recreation Accreditation Project to develop standards for preparing therapeutic recreation majors.
- Limited assessment tools were available, despite a few attempts and a Therapeutic Recreation Journal's focus on including individuals with disabilities.
- In the 1970s new instruments were developed including the Milwaukee Avocation Satisfaction Questionnaire, Leisure satisfaction based on job satisfaction surveys, Construction Leisure Activity Survey, Leisure Activities Blank, Overs' Picture Card Survey, Walshe Temperament Survey (for measuring mood in activity), and Fox Activity Therapy Social Skills (Carney, 1977). The community integration program emerged as well.
- The 1980s featured a move toward a more standardized assessment process. Approaches encouraged multi-method use. Incorporation of standardized and non-standardized tests was common.
- The 1990s involved the first collection of RT assessments in textbooks. Further survey and assessment of current research, together with a growth in the number of available commercial instruments, were also apparent. The emphasis was toward functional outcome assessment.
- In the 2000s-present, the approach shifted to specialized interdisciplinary assessments, valid over homemade assessments, and client-centered care which was functional versus only leisure focused.
- New assessments involved computerized healthcare records and increased attention to efficiency to assess for reimbursement or diagnosis.
- Assessment protocols, including materials, required credentials, facilitation techniques, and interpretive norms, were created in this period.
- Current issues with RT assessments included research into the functional meaning of scores, valid instruments, research using RT instruments with low reliability scores, and reducing agencies that use homemade tests and leisure surveys only.
