    History of Team Handball

    • Originated in Scandinavian countries in the early 1900s as an outdoor sport with 11 players per team.
    • Adapted to indoor play in the 1920s using 7 players per team.
    • Became an international Olympic sport in more than 140 countries, with men's play starting in 1972, and women's play in 1976.
    • The sport has existed in the US since 1959.
    • US men's team won gold in 1972.

    Regulation Rules

    • Game consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute intermission.
    • No time-outs except for injuries/major interruptions.
    • Players can hold the ball up to 3 seconds.
    • Players can take 3 steps with the ball.
    • Players can dribble the ball any number of times.
    • Players can pass or shoot the ball.
    • Can run three steps before and after a dribble but can't begin dribbling again after stopping.
    • Game starts with a throw-off (or throw-in) at center court.

    PE Modifications

    • Basketball court is used for practice.
    • All shots must be taken from behind the three-point line.
    • A bouncing ball similar in size but harder than a standard handball is used in class.
    • Players can move between offense and defense positions within the court (outside of the goalie area).
    • Free throw area can be crossed to retrieve a ball, but must shoot from designated area.
    • A jump ball starts the game in the center of the court.
    • Only one player can be in the goalie area at a time; they can leave at any time.

    Basic Rules

    • Players can advance the ball through dribbling, passing, or shooting.
    • Players can take 3 steps with the ball and dribble it repeatedly.

    • Corner throw is awarded if the ball goes off the defense team and goes out of play at the end-line.
