TEAM HANDBALL STUDY GUIDE History The game of team handball is a combination of soccer, hockey, basketball, and water polo. It originated in Scandinavian countries in the early 1900’s using 11 players per team outdoors. It was modified to become an indoor sport in the 1920’s using 7 players per team. Team handball is an international Olympic sport played in over 140 countries. The sport became an indoor Olympic sport for men in 1972, and then 1976 for women. Team handball has existed in the United States since 1959 and the USA men’s team won the gold medal in 1972. Regulation Rules A regulation game consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute intermission. There are no time outs except for injuries or other major interruptions as determined by the officials. A player may hold the ball up to three seconds, run three steps with the ball, and dribble as many times as desired, pass, or shoot. A player may run three steps before and after a dribble but may not begin dribbling again after having stopped dribbling. A regulation game begins with a throw on, sometimes called a throw-off, at center court by one team. PE Modifications Court—We use a regulation basketball court. All shots on goal must be taken from behind the 3 point line Ball—In class we use a small, bouncing ball. The actual sport of team handball does have a specific ball, similar in size to the one we use in class but much harder. Players—During class, all players are allowed to roam from offense to defense, outside of the goalie area located behind the end line. Players may run through the free throw area to retrieve balls, but always must shoot from their designated areas. Jump Ball—The start of the game begins with a jump ball in center court between both teams. Only one player is allowed behind the end line at a time. That player is the goalie. The goalie may leave the area at any time, and a different player may replace them at any time. Basic Rules 1. Players may advance the ball by dribbling like in basketball, passing to another teammate, or shooting towards the goal. 2. A player can take three steps with the ball, dribble as many times as desired, and hold the ball for three seconds. 3. No player may kick the ball, except for the goalie when attempting to make a save. 4. Making physical contact with a player that inhibits a shot or pass will result in a penalty. When a penalty is called and destroys a clear chance to score a goal, a free shot takes place from the penalty mark (top of the three-point arc). 5. Shots are allowed to bounce off the floor before going into the goal. 6. Goalies can NOT score for their own team from their team’s goal area. 7. If two players from opposing teams have possession of the ball at the same time, a jump ball is called. 8. After a successful goal, the defensive team (goalie) gets possession of the ball from their goal area. 9. Trapping is NOT allowed. Only one player may cover the ball at a time. 10. If the ball goes off the defending team and goes out on the goal (end) line, the attacking team is awarded a corner throw. 11. A dive shot is an aggressive shot where one will attack the goal by trying to get as close to the goal. Jumping in the air and into the goal area to take the shot does this. Official Court Diagram
