Study Notes
Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Check the victim's safety and response by shaking their shoulders and shouting "Are you OK?"
- If no response, call 112 and begin first aid
- Place the victim on their back on a hard surface
- Remove tight clothing around the neck and chest
- Check the mouth for foreign objects and remove them if found
Opening the Airway
- Use one hand on the head and two fingers on the chin to open the airway
- Give the victim a head tilt chin lift position
- Check for breathing using the Look-Listen-Feel method for 10 seconds
Breathing and Compressions
- If not breathing, call 112 and begin 30 compressions and 2 breaths
- Give two rescue breaths, each lasting 1 second, to raise the chest and allow time for air to come back out
- Determine the center of the chest and place the middle and ring fingers 1 cm below to begin compressions
- Apply 30 compressions to depress the chest bone by 4 cm at a rate of 100 per minute
- Give 2 breaths after 30 compressions, then repeat the cycle
Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (Choking)
- Definition: A life-threatening emergency where a foreign object lodges in the casualty's airway
- Use the heel of your free hand to clear any obstructions in the mouth
- Perform the Heimlich maneuver by standing behind the casualty, pressing your clasped hands into the epigastrium, and giving a sudden thrust to elevate the diaphragm
- Deliver up to five-seven abdominal thrusts and repeat if necessary
- If the victim becomes unconscious, check respiration, call for medical help, and perform BLS
Heimlich Maneuver on An Adult and Conscious Child
- On an adult: Stand behind the casualty, press your clasped hands into the epigastrium, and give a sudden thrust to elevate the diaphragm
- On a conscious child: Grasp your fist with the other hand and give a quick upward thrust into the abdomen
- Use less force for a child compared to an adult
