Study Notes
Health Psychology: Exercise
-
Warming Up for Exercise:
- Break into groups of 5 people.
- Discuss why some people exercise regularly, some sporadically, and some not at all.
- List 5 reasons for exercising and 5 reasons for not exercising.
- Discuss group ideas as a class to identify common themes.
Chapter Objectives:
-
Chapter 1 (of 2):
- Describe the fitness goals of different types of exercise.
- Analyze the reasons people exercise and how they relate to health goals.
- Explain the pros and cons of exercise for weight control.
- Trace the research on exercise and cardiovascular disease.
- Describe the mechanisms that link physical activity and cardiovascular health.
-
Chapter 2 (of 2):
- Evaluate other health benefits of physical activity and their impact on population health.
- Contrast symptoms of exercise addiction with drug addiction.
- Describe conditions increasing injury risk during exercise and how to minimize them.
- Describe factors for determining appropriate exercise levels for health benefits.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of different types of interventions for promoting exercise.
Reasons for Exercise:
- Health benefits of exercise include improved cardiovascular health, a longer lifespan, improved mental/cognitive functioning and protecting from various cancers.
Early Studies:
- 1950s studies found a link between sedentary lifestyles and a higher risk of heart disease, while active lifestyles decreased this risk.
Later Studies:
- More recent studies confirm the relationship between physical activity and decreased cardiovascular disease (CVD).
- People who survived heart attacks and incorporated physical activity into their recovery had a lower risk of another attack.
- Regular activity lowers risk of premature CVDs, like stroke.
Women and Men Benefits:
- Both women and men benefit from improving their cardiovascular fitness, resulting in a longer lifespan (with light to moderate exercise) and an increase in longevity by about 2 years.
- Exercise adds quality to the years by improving mental health, cognitive functioning, and overall well being.
Physical Activity and Cholesterol Levels:
- Exercise elevates HDL (good cholesterol) without raising LDL (bad cholesterol), creating a more favorable cholesterol ratio.
- Moderate exercise, with or without dietary changes, improves cholesterol ratio and reduces heart disease risk.
Protection Against Cancer:
- Exercise can lower cancer risk, especially for colorectal and breast cancer, lung, and prostate cancer.
- Exercise is beneficial for those undergoing cancer treatments to manage side effects, maintain strength, and control weight.
Prevention of Bone Density Loss:
- Regular exercise can prevent osteoporosis by maintaining bone density.
- Beginning exercise routines early in life and maintaining them throughout life is critical to protecting against bone density loss.
Control Diabetes:
- Regular exercise can help manage diabetes.
- Type 2 diabetes can be controlled with enough weight loss and can be put into remission with sustained effort.
- While Type 1 diabetes does not have a cure, exercise can still help manage the disease.
Psychological Benefits of Physical Activity:
- Exercise can reduce depression and anxiety.
- Exercise can act as a buffer against stress, helping manage it better.
- Exercise improves cognitive functioning and slows Alzheimer's progression.
Exercise Addiction:
- Some individuals treat exercise as an addiction, exhibiting withdrawal symptoms and continuing to exercise, even when injured or advised not to.
Injuries From Physical Activity:
- Minor muscle soreness and aches are common.
- Exercising outside of normal routines is more likely to cause severe injuries.
- Those who exercise regularly are vulnerable to accidents, including being hit by something or contracting sickness, or injuries that are not expected.
Death During Exercise:
- Deaths during exercise are rare.
- Most cases involve underlying, undetected cardiovascular problems triggered by strenuous activity.
How Much Exercise is Enough?:
-
Healthy adults (65 or younger) should aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days of the week or 20 minutes of vigorous activity 3 times a week. Adults should also aim for 8-10 strength training exercises for 12 repetitions at least twice a week.
-
Various types and lengths of exercise can benefit your body.
Informational Interventions:
- Only 33% of US adults meet recommended physical activity levels.
- Informational interventions promote physical activity awareness.
- Mass media campaigns for increasing awareness are not reliable but point-of-decision prompts, especially for obese people, have some effect.
Behavioral and Social Interventions:
- Behavioral interventions help people adhere to changes in routines for physical activity.
- Examples include educational programs, therapy with a personal trainer, etc.
- Acknowledging and understanding the lapse in habitual exercise, which is called the "abstinence violation effect" (or "the eff-it effect"), can motivate someone to continue their exercise regimen.
- Education and support programs for people who struggle with keeping up with exercise programs can help maintain the regimen.
Abstinence Violation Syndrome:
- One lapse in exercise doesn't signal a total failure
- People may say negative things, but exercise lapses should not lead to people not exercising again.
Environmental Interventions:
- Creating pleasing environments encourages physical activity.
- Access to engaging/attractive exercise areas like parks or trails can encourage people to exercise.
- Parks and trails, and other well designed public places for exercise are important but expensive.
Application Time:
- How might you help someone struggling with an exercise regimen, based on the lessons learned.
