    Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

    • The HPCSA is a statutory body established in terms of the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974.
    • The HPCSA is committed to protecting the public and guiding the health professions.
    • The HPCSA regulates health professions in SA and sets clear processes to be followed in achieving its statutory mandate.

    Mandate of HPCSA

    • Registers health professionals who meet their standards of education, training, professional skills, and behavior.
    • Institutes disciplinary proceedings against any registered professional who transgresses the rules.
    • Prosecutes those who pretend to be registered.
    • Promotes the health of the population, determines standards of professional education and training, and sets and maintains excellent standards of ethical and professional practice.

    Registration and Regulation

    • Registration with the HPCSA is a prerequisite for practicing any health profession in SA.
    • The HPCSA guides and regulates the health professions in aspects of registration, education and training, professional conduct, and ethical behavior.
    • Failure to register with the HPCSA constitutes a criminal offence.

    Governance and Structure

    • The HPCSA has a Council, Executive Management, and Governance structure.
