Edema
- Edema is the swelling of body parts, typically in the lower extremities (legs and feet).
- It usually occurs when fluid accumulates in the spaces between tissues.
- The skin often appears puffy and stretched.
- Common causes of edema include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure, deep vein thrombosis and blood clots.
- To assess edema, press your finger firmly for 3 to 4 seconds against the swollen area.
- If the pressure leaves a dent in the skin, it is called “pitting edema”.
Hair Inspection and Palpation
- Hair inspection and palpation are objective data used to assess hair health.
- Final hair is the dark, thicker hair that grows mainly on the scalp and eyebrows.
- Puberty is the stage of development when hair grows in the armpits, pubic area, face, and chest in males.
- The skin is a sensory surface with neurosensory end organs for touch, pain, temperature, and pressure.
Clubbing Nail Test
- Press the fingernails of the same finger against each other, starting near the fingernail.
- Normally, a small diamond-shaped “window” appears between the nail beds.
- If this window disappears, the clubbing nail test is positive and clubbing is present.
- Clubbing is a sign that the nail is thickening and curving.
Nail Consistency
- Nails are typically smooth, regular, and not brittle or splitting.
