- Always support the head when assessing a trauma patient.
- Serious head injury always implies a cervical spine(neck) injury.
- Provide Spinal Motion Restriction (SMR) in cases of head injury.
- Extra attention should be paid to the patient's level of consciousness.
3 Main Types of Head Injury

First Aid for Head and Spinal Injuries
- Head or spinal immobilization
- Ensure the airway is not compromised
- Remove any broken teeth, including loose dentures/dental appliances
- Gently cover ear/nose with a dressing and bandage if cerebral spinal fluid or blood leaks
- Avoid putting pressure on soft spots in the skull.
- Apply indirect pressure to bleeding wounds.
