Guidelines for Security and Control of Evidence/Property

The purpose of the guideline is to establish policies and procedures for the security and control of evidence/property in the custody of the agency.

The guideline applies to all members of the department.

The department has the obligation to store evidence and personal property in a manner that preserves the integrity of the item and maintains the chain of custody.

Property may include evidence, found, safekeeping, or personal property, such as cash, jewelry, narcotics, firearms, and deceased/arrested person's property.

Property should only be seized when needed for evidence or for the protection of an officer making an arrest.

The department shall maintain a separate, secure area for the storage of property and evidence, with restricted access to authorized personnel only.

Property and evidence shall be submitted as soon as possible, packaged appropriately, and submitted with a completed evidence card.

Chain of custody documentation must include the date, time, and name of the receiving person for each transfer of property or evidence.
