Guidance and Counseling in Iran

• Guidance and counseling in Iran was discussed at a secondary education conference in 1958.
• In 1965, a guidance department was established in the Ministry of Education.
• In 1968, a planning office for academic guidance was established to provide practical guidance and implementation programs in schools.
• In May 1971, a seminar at Tehran University's Faculty of Educational Sciences examined the guidance program and its challenges.
• The seminar recommended a trial, limited implementation of the guidance program, development of a comprehensive training program for specialists, writing of textbooks, and acquisition of necessary materials.
• In September 1971, secondary schools were established without a trial phase.
• Elementary education was reduced to five years, with three years dedicated to secondary education.
• The objectives of secondary education were:
  • Fostering ethical and spiritual values in students.
  • Developing discipline, order, and scientific thinking skills, starting from elementary school.
  • Identifying individual talents and interests in various fields (academic, technical, vocational), guiding students toward appropriate courses based on their strengths and national needs.
