Study Notes
- Africa is a highly diverse continent and the second-largest globally, after Asia.
- Climates in Africa range widely, from hot deserts to humid rainforests and permanently frozen glaciers.
- Africa's shape and size have evolved over 4.55 billion years due to tectonic plate movements.
Location
- Africa is centrally located.
- The Equator divides the continent into roughly equal northern and southern parts.
- The Prime Meridian passes through the Atlas Mountains near Accra, West Africa.
- Africa spans from 20°W to 52°E longitude.
- Its total land area is approximately 30.2 million square kilometers, about 20% of the Earth's total land area.
Division of Africa
- North Africa is located north of the Sahara and runs along the Eastern Coast.
- West Africa is west of 10°E longitude, excluding North Africa and the Maghreb.
- East Africa stretches from the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa to Mozambique, including Madagascar, but excludes the continent's southern and northern edges.
- Central Africa is the central mass that doesn't fall squarely into other regions.
- Southern Africa is generally south of 10°S latitude and the Congo rainforests.
Boundaries
- Africa is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the east and southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
- The Southern Ocean lies to the continent's extreme south, encircling Antarctica.
- Africa's longest coastline borders the Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Town to Gibraltar.
- It borders the North Atlantic Ocean and the South Atlantic Ocean.
- Africa is mostly defined simply by the bodies of water which surround it.
Plateaus
- Africa consists mostly of vast plateaus with varying elevations.
- Plateaus are generally flat with rugged, mountainous edges leading to narrow coastal plains.
- Some plateaus formed by erosion and volcanic activity provide ideal lands for cultivation and travel.
- Plateaus are higher in the east and south, with lower elevations in the north.
- The East African Plateau is higher than the plateaus of Southern Africa..
- Splitting in the eastern region has created mountain ranges, flat lands, and deep depressions.
- Depressions in the northern plateaus have formed the Great Rift Valley with impressive lakes.
- This plateau is also dotted with volcanic peaks.
- Mount Kilimanjaro towers over this plateau to the east.
- The Ethiopian Highlands, Africa's largest continuous plateau, features Lake Tana in its central depression.
Mountains
- Africa features significant mountain ranges like the Atlas Mountains.
Ruwenzori Range
- It stretches 130 kilometers along the Uganda-Congo border.
- The range includes lakes, river valleys, and glaciers between snow peaks, feeding the Semliki River.
- Mount Stanley is the tallest peak at 5,109 meters.
- The range is referred to as the 'Mountains of the Moon'.
- There are copper and cobalt deposits mined at Kilembe and Uganda, with hydropower from River Mubuku.
Atlas Mountains
- The Atlas Mountains span 2,500 kilometers across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
- They separate the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert.
- Toubkal, in Morocco, is the highest peak at 4,167 meters and the highest in North Africa.
- Mineral deposits include gold, silver, zinc, lead, and iron.
- Divided into: the Middle Atlas, High Atlas (Grand Atlas), and Anti-Atlas ranges (Morocco); the Saharan Atlas (Algeria); the Tell Atlas (Algeria and Tunisia); and the Aurès Mountains (Algeria and Tunisia).
Drakensberg Mountains
- They are the southern extension of Africa's interior highlands.
- The mountains rise to 3,300 meters before descending to the coastal lowlands near Durban.
- They serve as the headwaters of South Africa's largest river, the Orange River.
Mount Kilimanjaro
- Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, located in Tanzania at 5,895 meters above sea level.
- It is the world's largest freestanding mountain, not part of a range.
- It consists of three volcanoes: Kibo (tallest), Mawenzi, and Shira.
Rivers
- Rivers are vital for water, agriculture, transport, and biodiversity in Africa.
- They maintain wetlands, support livelihoods, and help inhabitants.
- The major rivers are the Nile (6,853 kilometers), Congo (4,700 kilometers), Niger (4,180 kilometers), and Zambezi (2,700 kilometers).
Nile River
- The Nile is the world's longest river formed by the Blue Nile from Ethiopia and the White Nile from Lake Victoria.
- The two rivers merge at Khartoum, Sudan, flowing north into the Mediterranean Sea.
- The Nile provides water for drinking, irrigation, trade, and travel in Egypt.
Congo River
- The Congo River rises in the highlands of East Africa, draining a large basin.
- It flows north then loops west, and is the second-longest river in Africa.
- It is the world's deepest and ninth-longest river, flowing through the Congo rainforest, which is the second-largest rainforest in the world.
- It is also known as the Zaire River.
Niger River
- The Niger River originates in Guinea, flows north and east through Mali, then loops south and west through Niger and Nigeria.
- Niger and Nigeria are named after this river.
Zambezi River
- It rises in Central Africa, flowing south and east into the Indian Ocean.
- It is the longest east-flowing river in Africa, originating in Zambia near the borders of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- The Zambezi features Victoria Falls.
Lakes
- Africa's major Great Lakes include Lake Albert, Lake Edward, Lake Kivu, Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Turkana, and Lake Victoria.
- Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and part of the Nile system, covering 69,000 square kilometers.
- The Great Lakes are located within nine countries surrounding the Great Rift Valley.
Deserts
- Africa has three major deserts: the Sahara, the Namib, and the Kalahari.
Sahara Desert
- The Sahara Desert is the world's largest hot desert at 9.2 million square kilometers, located in northern Africa.
- Antarctica is bigger, but is a cold desert
- It is characterized by dry, rocky plateaus and mountains in the northern section.
- It has minimal rainfall and experiences hot days and cold nights.
- Diverse wildlife includes gerbils, jerboas, cape hares, desert hedgehogs, Barbary sheep, gazelles, deer, wild asses, baboons, hyenas, jackals, sand foxes, weasels, and mongooses.
- More than 300 bird species are present
Namib Desert
- The Namib Desert features the world's highest sand dunes
- It is considered the oldest desert, with arid conditions for 80 million years.
- The Namib-Naukluft Park is Namibia's largest conservation area at 50,000 square kilometers.
- The Welwitschia plant, with only two continuously growing leaves, can live for up to 2,000 years.
Kalahari Desert
- The Kalahari Desert is a large sand basin stretching from the Orange River to Angola, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
- Wind-shaped sand masses result from the erosion of soft stone formations.
- Grasses, shrubs, and acacia trees survive long droughts.
- It's home to brown hyenas, lions, meerkats, antelopes, and various birds and reptiles.
Grasslands
- African Savanna grasslands lie between rainforests and deserts along the Equator with scattered trees.
- The Savanna has two seasons: a long dry season (winter) from October to March and a wet season (summer).
- These grasslands cover much of central Africa, from south of the Sahara and the Sahel to the continent's southern tip.
- Lions stalk prey and elephants roam there.
Great Rift Valley
- The Great Rift Valley is a 6,400-kilometer geological fault system from the Jordan River valley to the Zambezi River in Mozambique.
- It is the world's longest fault system, with elevations ranging from 400 meters below sea level (Dead Sea) to over 1,800 meters above sea level (southern Kenya).
