Study Notes

Mountain Formation

  • Types of mountain formation:
    • Volcanic: formed from volcanic activity
    • Fold: formed when tectonic plates collide and push up the Earth's surface
    • Block: formed when large sections of the Earth's crust break and move upwards
    • Dome: formed when magma rises and pushes up the Earth's surface
  • Mountain-building processes:
    • Orogenesis: the process of mountain formation through tectonic plate collision
    • Uplift: the process of the Earth's surface rising due to geological forces

Plate Tectonics

  • Theory of plate tectonics:
    • The Earth's lithosphere is broken into large plates that move relative to each other
    • These plates interact at their boundaries, causing geological activity
  • Types of plate boundaries:
    • Divergent: where plates move apart and new crust is formed
    • Convergent: where plates move towards each other and collide
    • Transform: where plates slide past each other horizontally
  • Plate tectonics and mountain formation:
    • Plate convergence can lead to mountain formation through folding and uplift

Volcanic Landforms

  • Types of volcanic landforms:
    • Shield volcanoes: gently sloping volcanoes with a broad base
    • Composite volcanoes: tall, conical volcanoes with a steep slope
    • Calderas: large depressions formed by volcanic collapse
    • Volcanic fields: areas of numerous small volcanoes
  • Volcanic features:
    • Lava flows: streams of molten rock that flow from a volcano
    • Volcanic ash: small particles of rock ejected into the air
    • Volcanic cones: cones formed by accumulated volcanic ash and rock

Desert Landforms

  • Types of desert landforms:
    • Dunes: ridges of sand formed by wind
    • Ergs: large areas of sand dunes
    • Oases: isolated areas of vegetation in the desert
    • Playas: dry lake beds
  • Desert formation processes:
    • Deflation: the removal of fine particles by wind, leaving behind coarser grains
    • Erosion: the removal of rock and soil by wind and water

Coastal Features

  • Types of coastal features:
    • Beaches: areas of sand or pebbles along the coastline
    • Cliffs: steep slopes or vertical faces along the coastline
    • Headlands: areas of land that jut out into the sea
    • Bays: areas of water partially enclosed by land
  • Coastal formation processes:
    • Wave erosion: the wearing away of the coastline by waves
    • Deposition: the accumulation of sediment along the coastline
    • Longshore drift: the movement of sediment along the coastline by waves and currents

Test your knowledge of geological processes and landforms, including mountain formation, plate tectonics, volcanic landforms, desert landforms, and coastal features.
