    Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

    • GBV is any harmful act against a person's will, based on socially defined gender differences.
    • It's a widespread human rights abuse, frequently unrecognized.
    • GBV violates human rights, denying individuals their right to life, safety, and well-being.
    • Impacts individuals, families and wider society. It has both short and long term consequences.

    Types of GBV

    • Intimate partner violence (including marital rape, sexual harassment, violence)
    • Dowry-related violence
    • Female infanticide
    • Honour crimes
    • Early/forced marriage
    • Female genital cutting
    • Other traditional practices harmful to women.

    Consequences of GBV

    • Health: Physical injuries (minor bruises to severe), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unintended pregnancies, complications during pregnancy/childbirth, mental health issues (depression, PTSD), suicidal thoughts, and impacts on children's development and school participation.
    • Social: Social isolation due to fear and trauma, strained relationships with family and friends, intergenerational trauma.
    • Economic: Increased costs of public health and social welfare systems, reduced ability for survivors to work, impacting financial stability.

    GBV's Relationship to Human Rights

    • GBV violates several human rights principles, including the right to life, liberty, property; physical and mental health; freedom from torture or cruel/inhuman treatment, freedom of opinion and expression/education.

    Perpetrators and Survivors

    • Perpetrators: Often those with power, in decision-making or authority positions.
    • Survivors: Preferred term over "victim" for those who experience GBV, indicating the active overcoming of trauma;
    • Actions in response to GBV must address both perpetrators and survivors

    • Historically, viewed as a private matter.
    • Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 (RA 9262) enacted to combat GBV.
