Study Notes

Gender-Based Violence

  • Gender-based violence is motivated by anger, hatred, or bias due to a person's gender and occurs at both individual and structural levels.
  • At the individual level, an attacker uses power to inflict injury, while structural violence involves systemic ways in which social structures disadvantage certain people.

Forms of Violence

  • Examples of structural violence include sexism, racism, and prejudice against religious groups, which can cause harm and are often ingrained in systems.
  • Craig Hicks's actions are an example of violence at the individual level, while the fear it created among Muslim and female students exemplifies structural violence.

Impact on Personal Freedom

  • Gender-based violence restricts personal freedom and can render marginalized groups dependent on others for safety.
  • Examples of restricted personal freedom include avoiding certain clothing or traveling alone at night due to fear of violence.

Global Statistics

  • 1 in 3 women have experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence during their lifetime (United Nations Statistics Division, 2015).
  • Within the United States, 1 in 5 women (22.3%) have experienced severe physical violence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016a).
  • In 2015, men murdered more than 1,600 women, with the most commonly used weapon being a gun (Violence Policy Center, 2015).
  • In 2016, the number of transgender women, particularly transgender women of color, who were murdered was the highest ever recorded within the United States (Human Rights Campaign, n.d.).
  • The United States has seen an overall drop in rates of violent crime in the last 30 years, but crimes against women have actually increased since 2008 (Walby, Towers, & Francis, 2015).
  • Better home and car security and decreased social acceptability of violence may be contributing factors to the drop in overall crime.

Violence Against Children

  • Violence against children occurs in every region of the world, with approximately 40 million children abused each year (UNICEF, 2014a).
  • In the United States, child abuse referrals increased from 3.6 million in 2014 to 4 million in 2015, with the numbers of children involved increasing from 6.6 to 7.2 million (Children's Bureau, 2016).
  • Girls are especially susceptible to abuse, with 1,670 children dying from abuse or neglect during the same period.
