Questions and Answers

What does the respiratory quotient (RQ) of 1 indicate?

  • The body is utilizing fats for metabolism.
  • The body is primarily using carbohydrates for energy. (correct)
  • CO2 production is higher than O2 consumption.
  • Oxygen consumption exceeds carbon dioxide production.

Under what condition is the respiratory quotient approximately 0.8?

  • When ingesting only proteins.
  • While following a mixed diet. (correct)
  • During high-intensity anaerobic exercise.
  • When primarily consuming fats.

What does Dalton's Law state regarding the pressure exerted by gases in a mixture?

  • The total pressure is the sum of all individual gas pressures. (correct)
  • Total pressure is independent of individual gas pressures.
  • It only applies to gases in a vacuum.
  • Each gas's pressure is affected by the presence of other gases.

Flashcards

Respiratory Quotient (RQ)

The ratio of carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) produced to oxygen (Oâ‚‚) consumed during cellular respiration. Different nutrients have different RQs.

Dalton's Law

This law states that in a mixture of gases, the total pressure is the sum of the individual partial pressures of each gas.

Henry's Law

This law describes how the amount of a gas dissolved in a liquid depends on the gas's partial pressure and its solubility.

Steady State Oxygen Consumption

The amount of oxygen consumed by the body cells equals the amount of oxygen entering the blood in the lungs.

Steady State Carbon Dioxide Exchange

The rate of carbon dioxide production by body cells entering the blood is equal to the rate of carbon dioxide leaving the blood in the lungs.

Study Notes

Gas Exchange

  • Gases like oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are exchanged between the blood and body tissues.
  • The volume of oxygen leaving tissues and entering the blood is the same as the volume entering blood in the lungs; similarly for CO2.
  • The rate at which cells use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, however, isn't always the same.
  • The amount of CO2 produced compared to O2 consumed, ratio (RQ), depends on the nutrients used.
  • RQ = 1 for carbs, 0.7 for fats, 0.8 for proteins, and about 0.8 on a mixed diet.
  • For a mixed diet, 8 CO2 molecules are produced for every 10 O2 molecules consumed.

Partial Pressures of Gases

  • Dalton's Law: in a gas mixture, each gas contributes to the total pressure independently.

  • The total pressure is the sum of individual gas pressures.

  • Pressure depends on temp, concentration, and altitude.

  • Henry's Law: the amount of gas dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the liquid.

  • Gas molecules dissolve, and the amount dissolved is proportionate to the gas pressure.
